Boat Trip to Minna Jima

As a diver, boat dives always add a feeling of a perfect vacation from every day grinds. The sun shining down on us as we glide through gentle waves. In Okinawa, we have so many islands nearby that we can explore and Minna Jima is definitely our most popular destination.

Where is Minna Jima?

Minna Jima is located just off the northern coast of Okinawa mainland. It is part of Motobu district. Because of its crescent moon shape, the locals call it the Croissant island, too.

Because of the lack (無い [na-i]) of fresh water (水 [mi-zu]), it was named Minna island.

The island is on top of coral reefs and therefore it is a great diving spot for enthusiasts.

Originally, it was a no-man’s island until 1903, about 13 households moved from Sesoko island to Minna Jima to start a sugarcane farming.

In recent years, 1/3 of the island was purchased by a tourism development company but the locals protested the plan and it was preserved as an island for all to enjoy.

In 1972, the island’s lighthouse was built.

The current population is about 50 and enough kids to run an elementary and Jr. High schools.

We have a few dive sites on Minna Jima so our boat trip consists, usually of 3 dives.

It is a wonderful half a day trip in the north.

What to expect on this boat dive trip?

Because of the island’s location (literally sitting on corals), there are so many beautiful marine animals living around this island, which makes it a perfect multiple dive trip location. Turtles are often seen around here as well as Frog Fish and you might be suddenly surrounded by a school of Fusilier fish.

Goofing off on the boat with a group of like-minded folks might just be the tonic for your busy schedule.

Come and chill with us!
